MARGRÉT KOLKA
HARALDSDÓTTIR

Margrét (b. 1948) graduated from the National Art College of Iceland in 1975 and completed her master’s degree in Danish and English from the University of Iceland in 1993. She founded the Art School of Garðabær and directed it for 15 years. For several years Margrét has attended courses in watercolour painting held at the Art School of Kópavogur under the direction of Erla Sigurðardóttir and Derek Mundell. She has also attended several workshops held by foreign watercolour masters, notably Bridget Woods, Keith Hornblower, Ylva Molitor-Gardsell and Ann Larson Dahlin.
During recent years Margrét has chosen motives relating to landscape and to birds. In her landscape painting she uses the flow of the paint to interpret the play of light and shade on the subject.
In her paintings of birds Margrét chooses to emphasise their character as opposed to giving a realistic interpretation. She gives them an almost human expression so that they look at the viewer hostilely or inquisitively; it’s up to the viewer to decide.
